Please note: Students need to draw upon primary resources that are relevant to and thoroughly support their qualifying experience topic/complex question. These primary resources need to relate to both a principle professional code of ethics and a moral philosophical code of ethics. Students should not simply "cut & paste" philosophical ideas into the ethics section of their paper.
Instead, students should think and write critically in this section of their paper by asking themselves the following questions: (a) What are the ethical implications of this topic/complex question? (b) What are the ethical dilemmas/discrepancies of this question and how are they explained by both a professional and philosophical code of ethics? (c) What kind of ethical complications/issues/problems arise from this topic/complex question?
First Time Submission
For Fall 2017, the date for
All students submitting papers for the first time are required to consult with the Ph.D. Program Director, Dr. Deborah Hokien, via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 570.348.6279, regarding the approval of the student's complex question proposal and the paper requirements. The consultation should be at least one (1) month in advance prior to submitting their Qualifying Experience Intent Form.
Students must submit their Qualifying Experience Intent Form to Dr. Deborah Hokien, via email at email@example.com two (2) weeks in advance prior to the posted deadlines for submitting the Qualifying Paper.
Two (2) electronic copies of the Qualifying Paper must be submitted to Dr. Deborah Hokien, via email at firstname.lastname@example.org before or on the deadline dates. One electronic copy must be WITHOUT YOUR NAME, and the second must INCLUDE YOUR NAME. No hard copies are required.
Papers are reviewed, blind, by three
In order to provide adequate time for revisions and mentoring, a student who receives an unsatisfactory overall rating of 2.99 or below on their Qualifying Paper will be required to re-submit their qualifying paper in the following semester (excluding the summer). Additionally, students will no longer be allowed to prolong their resubmission beyond a
Students have one (1) additional attempt to pass their qualifying paper based on the feedback from the Faculty Review Committee. A student who fails to re-submit their qualifying paper in the subsequent semester will be withdrawn from the program immediately.

Students who pass their paper review are then scheduled for their oral presentation. The same three faculty reviewers serve as the oral presentation review committee and rate the presentation using the Qualifying Presentation Review Form (see below). The oral presentation given in a PowerPoint format should be approximately 30-minutes in length. A 15-20 minute question and answer period will follow. Similar to the written paper, an average overall rating from the faculty reviewers of 3.0 is necessary to pass; presentations receiving an average rating of 4.0 or higher are considered Outstanding. Students who are unsuccessful in the oral presentation must meet with the Program Director.
Students have one (1) additional attempt to pass their qualifying presentation based on the feedback from the Faculty Review Panel. A student who fails their qualifying presentation in the subsequent semester will be withdrawn from the program immediately.
May 4, 2018: Final date for repeat presentations from fall 2017 to be scheduled.
NOTE: All student Qualifying Papers will be reviewed using TurnItIn.com before they will be delivered to Faculty Reviewers.
