Congratulations to the 2022 Alumni Award Recipients

The Marywood Alumni Association bestows the Golden Marywoodian Award upon a member of the 50^th honor year class who has demonstrated a commitment to community and civic service. The recipient should have distinguished themselves in their career and/or professional field with a record of making a difference in the lives of others, demonstrating engagement through volunteerism (such as, mentorships, local, national and international service and inclusion efforts), as well as set a standard for life-long excellence which embodies the Core Values of Marywood.

Born and raised in Scranton, The Honorable Anne Healey ‘72, proudly serves in the Leadership of the Maryland House of Delegates as Chair of the Rules and Executive Nominations Committee. She has represented District 22 in the Maryland state House since 1991. She was educated by IHM Sisters at St. John the Evangelist in South Scranton, Chapel School in the Hill Section, Cathedral Grade School, and Cathedral High School. She chose to attend college at Marywood, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972. Her blue-collar family, along with her early life experiences and interests, shaped her future path in public service.

As a young girl, Anne was moved by stories of the Civil Rights Movement and was inspired by President John F. Kennedy. She became active in Democratic politics in 8^th Grade, working on a mayor’s race in Scranton. After graduating from Marywood, she moved to the Washington area to attend graduate school at The Catholic University of American, where she earned a Master of Arts degree, and then began a career in journalism. She started as a reporter for The Catholic Standard, the newspaper for the Archdiocese of Washington, and later became editor of three different weekly newspapers: The Catholic Review in Baltimore, The Prince George’s Post-Sentinel, and The Prince George’s Post. Anne and her husband, Neal, have lived in the same house in Old Hyattsville since their marriage in 1979. The parents of two children, they have always been active in their church and community.

In her years as a member of the House of Delegates, Anne has been a trusted leader in promoting education, public safety, and economic development in Maryland. She has sponsored successful legislation on a wide range of issues, from protecting vulnerable adults from domestic violence to making the tax code fairer and more progressive. She has been an outspoken advocate for working people, for the needy and vulnerable and for Prince George’s County, and her tireless work on behalf of others has merited recognition such as the Legislative Champion Award and inclusion in Maryland's Top 100 Women, among other accolades.

For her considerable commitment to service in the community, along with her exemplary professional record of excellence and empowerment, framed always by her deep faith and her respect for others, the Marywood Alumni Association is pleased to recognize The Honorable Anne Healey '72 with the 2022 Golden Marywoodian Award for the Class of 1972.

Dr. Joseph Trunzo '93 is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Bryant University, where he has worked since 2002. He also is the Associate Director (founding) of Bryant’s School of Health and Behavioral Sciences and serves as the Director of the University’s Center for Health and Behavioral Sciences. In addition to his Bryant faculty appointments, Professor Trunzo has maintained an active private practice as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Providence, Rhode Island, since 2002. He received his B.S. in Psychology from Marywood in 1993 and then earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from MCP Hahnemann University (now Drexel University College of Medicine) in 1997 and 2000, respectively. He was named an Outstanding Student in Clinical & Health Psychology at MCP Hahnemann University and held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Brown University Clinical Psychology Training Consortium. He also held an adjunct research faculty appointment at Brown University through a National Cancer Institute funded grant.

Dr. Trunzo, who is a TEDxBryantU presenter, has written two books, Long-Haul COVID: A Survivor’s Guide: Transform Your Pain & Find Your Way Forward and Living Beyond Lyme: Reclaim Your Life From Lyme Disease and Chronic Illness. In addition, he has published extensively in professional journals, contributed expertise to top media outlets, authored and co-authored a comprehensive array of refereed papers, and has made 38 presentations at professional conferences across the United States, Canada, Europe and, recently, in Thailand. Dr. Trunzo is a member of several professional associations, has participated in over two dozen professional development workshops, retreats, and programs, and has facilitated a number of continuing education workshops and seminars, covering a wide range of topics.

Dr. Amy Freeman '98, MSW '07, MBA '22 is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has 24 years of professional experience in the human services field. She received her Bachelor of Science from Marywood University in 1998, and her Master of Social Work in 2007. She earned her Doctor of Social Work in 2019 from Millersville University. Additionally, she received her MBA degree from Marywood in 2022.

Over the past 15 years, Dr. Freeman has specialized in program development and the clinical treatment of traumatic stress. Designated a Diplomat by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, she serves as incumbent Specialty Social Work Supervisor at the Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center. Dr. Freeman also has served as an adjunct professor in Marywood University’s School of Social Work. She is married to William Freeman and lives in Dalton, Pa.

The Outstanding Recent Alumni Award will be given to an alumna/us, within 15 years of graduation, who has demonstrated significant achievements which embodies the core values of Marywood.

Dr. Matthew Nice, M.S. '15 is an assistant professor with the Department of Counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is a 2012 graduate of King's College, where he received a bachelor's degree after double majoring in Psychology and Sociology. In 2015, he attained a Master of Science degree in Counselor Education PreK-12 from Marywood University. Dr. Nice earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Duquesne University in 2020.

Professionally, he has published articles on the college-going experience in young adults, school counseling preparation for college readiness, and assessment and measurement invariance. He was selected as part of a national committee to revise the School Counseling Praxis exam, taken by thousands of students across the country. Dr. Nice also is the incoming President of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association and President-Elect of the Association for Adult Development and Aging. Currently, he resides Pittsburgh, Pa., and enjoys running, hiking, and participating in obstacle racing with friends.

To his numerous accomplishments, the Marywood Alumni Association is pleased to add its own recognition, by presenting Dr. Matthew Nice, M.S. '15 with the 2022 Outstanding Recent Alumni Award.

The Alumni Community Achievement Award is bestowed by the Marywood Alumni Association upon alumni who have made an impact in their community through service, philanthropy, and/or advocacy.

After working for several rewarding years in the human services field, Kristinia Beckage Luke '11 decided to pursue her dream of flying and enrolled in Marywood University’s Aviation Program, where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Aviation Management.in 2011 and achieved her goal of becoming a pilot.

While at Marywood, Kristinia was an active member of the Marywood Aviators Club, where she was first inspired to use aviation as a means to help others. Since graduation, Kristinia has been fortunate enough to combine her aviation skills with her passion for service. She was a mission coordinator with Angel Flight East, a volunteer pilot organization that flies people in need of distant medical care at no cost. She later joined Patient AirLift Services recruiting, onboarding, and training volunteer pilots for humanitarian flying, and she was instrumental in the formation of its nascent disaster relief program, PALS SkyHope.

Her avid support of public benefit flying and keen knowledge of the sector has led to her current role as Executive Director of the Air Care Alliance, a nationwide league of humanitarian flying organizations dedicated to community service. Kristinia serves on the board of directors of the Alliance for Aviation Across America and contributes to numerous committees and local charitable endeavors. Additionally, she is a member of Women in Aviation International and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. A native Scrantonian, she now resides in the Philadelphia suburbs with her husband, Dan–a fellow Marywood Aviation graduate–and their two loving children.

Adding to these accomplishments, with grateful appreciation for all she has done to lead by example and to embrace service to others through her humanitarian efforts, the Marywood Alumni Association is pleased to recognize Kristinia Beckage Luke '11 with the 2022 Alumni Community Achievement Award.

Awarded to a current (10 years or more), retired, or emeritus member of the Marywood faculty or staff, in recognition of their contributions to student success and their demonstration of the institution’s Core Values. Recipients have made a significant impact on the Marywood community and have worked to mentor future alumni leaders, advance the University’s mission, and enhance the integrity of the University.

Lia Richards-Palmiter, Ph.D. '09 earned her Ph.D. in Human Development with concentration in Social Work from Marywood University. She is the BSW Director in the School of Social Work at Marywood University. She is the past Director of Student Equity and Inclusion and past Director of Diversity at Marywood University. She teaches in the Social Work, Psychology, and Strategic Leadership departments. Dr. Richards-Palmiter is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her full CV can be found at www.helpingfamilies.com.

Dr. Richards-Palmiter has provided trainings and discussion forums bringing people together for authentic, healing dialogue focused on self awareness and dismantling the underpinnings of a hierarchy of human value based on racism, discrimination, social injustice, and inequity. These trainings have been given to community partners, religious organizations, schools, college/university campuses, and mental health providers. She has provided these trainings for over 20 years.

Adding to these accomplishments, and with grateful appreciation for all she has done to lead by example in respect for and in service to others through her equity, inclusion, and awareness efforts, both on campus and beyond, the Marywood Alumni Association is pleased to recognize Lia Richards-Palmiter, Ph.D. '09 with the 2022 Faculty and Staff Alumni Impact Award.
