Many students encounter a significant shift in academic expectations upon entering college, including increased workload, higher-level coursework, and greater self-directed learning.

Individualized sessions with the Office of Academic Success can help students understand these expectations, develop effective study habits, and learn time management skills to balance their academic responsibilities.

Recognizing that personal challenges can significantly impact academic performance, The Office of Academic Success offers support and referrals to appropriate resources.

Whether students are dealing with mental health concerns, familial issues, or financial stressors, the office provides a safe space for students to seek assistance and guidance. By addressing personal difficulties proactively, the office promotes student well-being and resilience, laying the groundwork for sustained academic success.

Learning to advocate for oneself is a crucial skill for college success, yet many students may feel uncertain about how to navigate academic policies, seek help when needed, or communicate effectively with professors.

Individualized sessions with the Office of Academic Success can empower students to develop self-advocacy skills, navigate campus resources, and access support services that align with their academic and personal needs.

Setting academic and personal goals is essential for students to stay motivated and focused throughout their college journey.

Through individualized sessions, the office can assist students in identifying their short-term and long-term goals, creating actionable plans to achieve them, and tracking their progress over time.

This proactive approach can help students stay on track academically and maintain a sense of purpose and direction.

Effective organization and study skills are fundamental for academic achievement. Through workshops the office equips students with strategies to manage their time efficiently, prioritize tasks, and maintain structured study habits. By instilling these skills, students are empowered to navigate the demands of university life with confidence and competence.

Test anxiety can significantly impede academic performance and undermine student confidence. The Office of Academic Success offers workshops to help students manage test anxiety effectively.

These workshops include test-taking strategies that equip students with techniques to approach exams strategically, enhancing their ability to demonstrate their knowledge and skills under pressure.

Charting out an academic pathway in college can be daunting for many students. The Office of Academic Success provides guidance and resources for major exploration, helping students align their knowledge, skills and interests with potential academic majors and career pathways. The office also advises our undeclared students.

Faculty Resources

The Office of Academic Success works closely with faculty advisors in order to provide a rewarding advising experience for both advisors and advisees.

In addition to our new faculty advisor training provided each year, we would be happy to offer additional training either on a departmental or individual level. If you are interested in receiving additional training, please contact us at advising@marywood.edu to schedule a training session.

If you have a student in your class who has stopped attending class, is attending class intermittently, or is not completing assignments, this can be an indication of academically at-risk behavior.

If we can reach out to a student, provide solutions, or referrals early in the semester, we may be able to help the student get back on track.

You can email concerns to advising@marywood.edu or call us at (570) 340-6043.

In order for the advising process to be successful, here are some tips to keep in mind.

An effective advisor will:

  • Provide effective guidance to students regarding their education, career, and life goals
  • Create a partnership between the advisee and advisor
  • Help advisees plan their academic programs, identify internships and/or summer work experiences in preparation for their chosen careers
  • Know important dates such as add/drop dates, last day to withdraw, etc.
  • Know processes, such as Leave of Absences, Incompletes, etc.
  • Be available to students
  • Understand the core curriculum in addition to all major requirements
  • Be aware of all campus resources

Our office would be happy to meet with any advisor for an individual refresher session on academic advising.  Additionally, we are always available to answer any questions you may have regarding academic advising.
