Among the most urgent challenges facing America today is growing racial, ethnic, and economic segregation. Increasing aversion to difference and rising distrust among communities nationally have left colleges and universities with the challenge of healing from the legacies and harm of racism. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) is partnering with higher education institutions to develop Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Centers to prepare the next generation of strategic leaders and critical thinkers to promote racial healing and to catalyze efforts to address current inequities grounded in notions of a racial hierarchy. As a national, community-based initiative, the TRHT effort seeks to address the historical and contemporary effects of race and racism within our communities. Each TRHT Campus Center prioritizes expansive, community-based healing activities that seek to change collective community narratives and broaden the understanding of our diverse experiences.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it's the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead

At Marywood, we plan to take the TRHT framework and apply it to our communities and do the work necessary for systemic social change at our University and in the NEPA region.

According to AAC&U, Marywood University is among thirteen institutions selected through a competitive process as sites for the second cohort of TRHT Campus Centers. Lynn Pasquerella, president of AAC&U said, “AAC&U is thrilled to partner with these outstanding institutions on our way to establish 150 centers across the country to ensure that higher education is playing a leadership role in promoting racial and social justice.”

In partnership with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation effort, AAC&U works with higher education institutions across the country to develop self-sustaining, community-integrated TRHT Campus Centers. Organized around the five pillars of the TRHT framework—narrative change, racial healing and relationship building, separation, law, and economy—the Centers seek to prepare the next generation of leaders to confront racism and to dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human value.
