Calabro Delfino Amphitheatre Dedicated
Calabro Delfino Amphitheatre Dedicated
On June 2, during Alumni Weekend, the Michael and Gwen Calabro Delfino ’47 Amphitheatre was formally dedicated by Sister Mary Persico, IHM, President, and blessed by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn, friend of the University. Benefactor Michael Delfino was in attendance, and Sister Mary Persico, IHM, President, emphasized the commitment that he and his late wife, Gwen Calabro Delfino ’47, shared for Marywood.
“This amphitheatre is the fruit of a dream that Mike and Gwen had, that we would have a place where we could bring the community together,” said Sister Mary.
The Calabro Delfino Amphitheatre, located next to Marywood’s world-class Learning Commons, is a space where academics, staged art, outdoor exhibitions, and recreation thrive, enhancing Marywood’s continuing commitment to provide the community with an array of cultural events and educational opportunities. A signature feature of the amphitheatre is The Seekers, a sculpture grouping created by alumna, Professor Emerita, and Former Chair of the Art Department Sister Cor Immaculatum Heffernan ’54. The Seekers represent the power of information technology, social interaction, and cross-disciplinary learning to transmit the wisdom of the past, to assimilate knowledge of the present, and to encourage creative achievement in the future. Sister Mary noted the detail that Sister Cor carved into each sculpture, and how they capture the essence of today’s Marywood students.
Orientation activities, a summer concert, and various student life events have been held at the Calabro Delfino Amphitheatre, but it is also a casual space with outdoor seating where students enjoy relaxing, studying, or catching up with one another. Haleigh Zurek ’18, President of the Student Alumni Association, said, “Having a new hangout spot on campus is great, especially when it’s dedicated to an alumna! Students love to use the new amphitheatre to study or have a cook out. The area is multi-functional, and I am excited to hear about all the future memories made there.”
