Office of Equity and Inclusion

The Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) values the educational experiences of all students, faculty, and staff at Marywood University. We are committed to providing a safe environment free from bias, harassment, and discrimination. The office strives toward inclusive excellence by providing educational programs and training, advancing recruitment initiatives, and engaging the community in topics about race, discrimination, and social justice.

Title IX and Discrimination complaints are handed by OEI. Campus community members are obligated to report incidents of discrimination to the Title IX Coordinator.

We work collaboratively with partners across campus to ensure that all members of the Marywood University community feel included and have the resources and support they need to thrive.

The mission of the Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion is to create a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff free from bias, discrimination, and prejudice while also educating and preparing tomorrow’s leaders to thrive in a global society.

Marywood prohibits discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, sex (including sex-based harassment, gender, sex stereotypes, sex characteristics, pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity), national origin (including shared ancestry and ethnic characteristics), age, creed, religion, disability, marital status, citizenship, genetic information, military/veteran status, political belief or affiliation, use of a guide or support animal, and any other class of individuals protected from discrimination under federal, state, or local law, regulation, or ordinance in any of the University’s educational programs and activities, and in the employment (including application for employment) and admissions (including application for admission) contexts. Concerns or reports can be shared with the University’s Title IX Coordinator.

Multiculturalism

Acknowledges and promotes acceptance and understanding of different cultures living together within a community. It fosters the peaceful coexistence of diverse races, ethnicities, and other cultural groups in a given social environment.

Inclusion

Exists when traditionally marginalized individuals and groups feel a sense of belonging and are empowered to participate in majority culture as full and valued members of the community, shaping and redefining that culture in different ways.

Equity

Refers to the process of creating equivalent outcomes for members of historically underrepresented and oppressed individuals and groups. Equity is about ending systematic discrimination against people based on their identity or background.

Diversity

Refers to all the ways in which people differ, including primary characteristics, such as age, race, gender, ethnicity, mental and physical abilities, and sexual orientation: and secondary characteristics, such as education, income, religion, work experience, language skills, geographic location, and family status.

Title IX Training

This training will provide an overview of Title IX, reporting requirements, confidentiality, retaliation, and the universities policies. Trainings can be customized for students, faculty, and staff.

Ally/Safe Zone Training

Marywood University aims to be a safe, empowering, and affirming place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, & queer (LGBTQ+) students, faculty, & staff.

Diversity Circles

Diversity circles allows people from different backgrounds to engage in topics related to diversity such as race, homophobia, gender, and class. The idea is to cultivate diversity through dialogue and understanding. Participants are encouraged to speak from their own experiences to move the discussion forward. The discussion groups typically have 8-12 participants and meet for 5-6 weeks.

Talk of the University Discussions

The Director of Student Equity and Inclusion and the Dean of Students host a dialogue series called the “Talk of the University” that allows students, faculty, and staff to discuss local, regional, and national issues. Topics such as toxic masculinity, LGBTQA rights, veterans, disability issues, racism and discrimination have been covered in the past.

The Escalation Workshop

“The Escalation Workshop is a film-based discussion that opens people’s eyes to the warning signs of relationship abuse. The workshop consists of a film, Escalation, followed by a guided discussion led by a trained facilitator.”

These trainings can cover a variety of topics which can be customized to meet your needs.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

The committee promotes understanding of oneself and others to create cultural competency for members of the Marywood University community and the regional communities. Lactation Rooms

Lactation rooms are available for mothers who need to express breast milk in the Room 210C in the Nazareth Student Center. There is another room under renovation for students to utilize in the Liberal Arts Center, Room Number to be determined. If the room is locked, please call Campus Safety at 570-348-6242.

Office of Disability Services

The Office of Disability Services ensures that the university is in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. Students are encouraged to contact Disabilities Services if you qualify for services.

STARS Program

The Students Together Achieving Remarkable Success (STARS) program is an education-based program that seeks to address the academic needs of Latinx youth in the 7th to 12th grade through tutoring, mentoring, and workshops. The STARS program has created a positive impact in the community by not only servicing Latinx students, but also their parents by providing workshops for parents and breaking down language barriers.
