Sr. Benedicta Berendes Scholarship Recipients Announced
Marywood University recently announced the recipients of the Sister Benedicta Berendes, IHM Memorial Fund, which is funded by Marywood graduates Mary Kay Pieski, Ph.D., and Sally Coveleskie. Marywood students Joseph Buderwitz, Scranton, Pa., an undergraduate history/secondary education major, and Catherine Owens, Clarks Summit, Pa., a graduate student pursuing a master of arts in teaching degree with certification in English, are the 2016 recipients of the Memorial Fund.
Mr. Buderwitz and Ms. Owens traveled to Poland this summer for the Teaching English in Poland (TEIP) program, which was developed by the Kosciuszko Foundation. The program, with honorary sponsorship by the Polish National Commission for the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), selects and trains participants from across the United States.
The Sister Benedicta Berendes, IHM Memorial Fund provides financial support to candidates accepted and traveling to Poland through the Kosciuszko Foundation. Mr. Buderwitz and Ms. Owens were a part of a unique cross-cultural initiative that brings together American volunteers with Polish students, ages 7 to 16, to bring American life and language to Polish youth, as well as to learn more about Poland and their hosts.
For more information about the TEIP program, contact Joseph Polizzi, Ph.D., associate professor of education and educational leadership, at (570) 348-6211 ext. 2497 or japolizzi@marywood.edu.
