Marywood University was proud to have Dr. Yerodin Lucas, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, serve as a keynote speaker at the Greater Scranton MLK Commission’s annual celebration and awards dinner on Sunday, Jan. 18, at The University of Scranton. The event celebrated the life, legacy, and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and highlighted the importance of positive community and racial relations through education, programming, and special events.

This year’s program theme, “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?”, featured Dr. Lucas alongside Dr. Melissa Anyiwo, Ph.D., associate professor of history and director of Black Studies at The University of Scranton. University President Rev. Joseph Marina, S.J., provided the opening welcome.

Dr. Lucas, a Philadelphia native, brought extensive academic and professional expertise to the discussion. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from Arcadia University, a Master’s in Education from Temple University, and both a Master’s in Social Work and Ph.D. in Administration and Leadership from Marywood University. His published dissertation, Factors Affecting African American Male Students at Predominantly White Institutions: A Case Study in Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA), examined the support structures necessary for first-year Black male student persistence.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Dr. Lucas has gained professional experience and insight through work and travel in Asia, Canada, and Europe. His presentation highlighted the importance of community engagement, equity, and fostering inclusive opportunities for students of all backgrounds.

Marywood University congratulates Dr. Lucas on his participation and celebrates his continued commitment to social justice, leadership, and community dialogue.
