Course Tutoring

Students may request an individual or small group tutor for any non MATH, BIOL, CHEM, PHYS, or writing course or assignment.

• Tutor requests are open week 1-13 of the semester
• Tutor pairings take approximately 1-4 business days.
• When paired, students will receive an email with their tutor information, and the tutor will contact them within 1-2 business days.
• From the time of pairing, students agree to meet with their tutor no more or less than 30-60 minutes a week for the remainder of the semester in an agreed upon location, day, and time. Schedules may vary during finals week, and tutoring is not held during campus breaks.
• After any combination of two to three no-shows, last minute or frequent cancellations, or delayed or absent email communication, students forfeit their tutoring privileges for the remainder of the semester with the exception of extenuating circumstances.
• Pairings granted on a first-come, first-serve basis dependent on available staffing.

What To Expect

• Students are responsible for attending their scheduled tutoring sessions on time and prepared with appropriate books, notes, questions, and session goals.
• Tutors may not give answers to any take home exams or assignments. Writing tutors do not edit or proofread. All tutors help you to understand content better and develop necessary study skills, but they are not expected to know all material and do not directly instruct content.
• Tutors will assist understanding of content but also provide study, organizational, time management, and note taking tips!

Frequency

• All math, science, and writing tutoring appointments are limited to three per week and one per day for each center.
• Individual tutor pairings must meet 30-60 minutes every week upon pairing for the remainder of the semester. Students may not utilize this tutoring service exclusively for exam cramming and excede or drop below the weekly requirement.

Cancellation, No-Show, and Communication Policies

• Students must use their Marywood student email for all communication. Individual tutor pairings may exchange phone numbers at their own mutual agreement.
• Students must cancel all math, science, and writing appointments an hour or more in advance using the link found in the appointment confirmation and reminder emails or will otherwise be marked as a no-show.
• Individual tutor pairings should cancel with 24 hour’s notice. Email your tutor and offer a few alternative options to reschedule. Check your email to confirm a new session. Late cancellations are marked as a no-show.
• Students who do not communicate with their tutor within two days of pairing each week to communicate weekly sessions will be marked as a no-show.
• After two no-shows or three advanced and non-rescheduled appointments, students are banned from using tutoring services or the remainder of the semester.

• If you have a documented disability, please know that your tutor will not be aware of your disability unless you inform them. Any information disclosed on the request form or to the Director of Tutoring & Writing Centers is confidential. If you feel you need extra writing assistance due to a disability, please book with Katie McNulty at the Writing Center.
• We aim to provide any reasonable accommodations in compliance with ADA, but please know that tutoring itself is not an accommodation covered under 504, and peer tutors are not professional tutors. Please contact Disability Services at Disabilityservices@marywood.edu to discuss academic accommodations.

Tutor Requirements

• Applicants must have completed a minimum of 24 credits of coursework. Students anticipating completing remaining credits are eligible to apply near the end of their semester. Transfer students welcome!
• Must maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA
• Excellent email, communication, record keeping, and interpersonal skills
• May apply to tutor courses they have completed with a B+ or higher. Transfer credits accepted.
  • Course tutor need will vary per semester, but applicants should be willing and qualified to tutor a variety of courses. Exceptions are made for high demand and difficult-to-staff courses.
  • Math and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) tutors should qualify to tutor several courses in their respective areas, including higher-level courses.
  • Writing tutors must have received a B+ or higher in ENGL160: Composition & Rhetoric, a B+ in a comparable course from another institution, or received AP Composition credit. They must also submit a formal writing sample with the application.
