As an alumna, former trustee, former board chair, and now the 13th—and first lay president, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the rich legacy of excellence each of you has helped to build at Marywood. Marywood University continues to offer the “Best Value” in September 2024 among Northeast Pennsylvania universities, according to the 2025 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges ranking.

Marywood University earned impressive placements both nationally and statewide in the 2025 Niche College Rankings in October 2024.

Marywood University’s nursing program was notified that its 2024 graduating class achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX Exam in October 2024.

Marywood University, in partnership with Gourmet Dining, received the Gold Award for “Catering – Special Event of the Year” in a national dining competition in July 2024. The winning event, Celebrate Marywood (formerly known as the Community Leadership Celebration), earned top honors for its exceptional presentation and service, placing the University in contention for the grand prize in this category.

New and Innovative Academic Programs

Marywood University added two new minors, AI Literacy and Applied AI, to equip students with expertise in high-growth and in-demand areas that employers are seeking. “Employers are seeking AI-skilled graduates. These new minors will boost our students’ employment opportunities and career trajectory as a result,” said Lisa A. Lori, Marywood University President. “Our students will be equipped to excel and innovate, no matter which career path they choose.”

Community-Focused Events and Outreach

Marywood University is collaborating with The Garden of Cedar, a local nonprofit organization in Scranton’s South Side neighborhood, on a community garden project featuring sculpture, native plants, vertical planters, a hydroponic system, and other elements to be added in future phases. The public unveiling ceremony took place on Friday, May 16, 2025, and highlighted the collaborative efforts of Marywood’s Environmental Science Program, Art Department, School of Architecture (SOA), and School of Business and Global Innovation (SBGI). Many recent SOA alumni who designed and built the sculptures attended the event, joining community members to celebrate the project’s completion before reuniting at VooDoo for a special alumni gathering.

Celebrate Marywood, our newly reimagined flagship annual fundraising event, was held on Thursday, May 1, 2025. This vibrant celebration took place outdoors on a perfect evening in the beautiful Motherhouse and Seminary Morgan Memorial Garden. Celebrate Marywood honored Richard, a former Trustee, and Erin Kane, dedicated community advocates, for their outstanding contributions to Marywood and the region.

Marywood University celebrated the 2025 Scholarship Luncheon on Sunday, April 6, 2025, recognizing the establishment of 10 new scholarships and one new programmatic endowment. This year, the University announced four endowed scholarships, one programmatic endowment, and six annual scholarships. In the 2024–2025 academic year, Marywood awarded 605 named scholarships, honoring the generosity of donors and the achievements of student recipients.

We had an incredible time celebrating Alumni and Family Weekend in September 2024! The festivities included honoring the Class of 1974 as they were inducted into the Sister M. Cuthbert Donovan, IHM Society, and recognizing our Alumni Award winners at the All Class Welcome Back Dinner—capping off a memorable weekend of connection, celebration, and Pacer pride.

In March 2024, Marywood University was proud to announce a new partnership with the Pennsylvania National Guard, making it the only university in Lackawanna County to offer eligible students and their families 100% tuition coverage through the Educational Assistance Program (EAP) and Military Family Education Program (MFEP).

Six Marywood students had the opportunity to study abroad in the Summer of 2024 by attending cultural exchange summer camps in Poland through the Eagle-Orzel Educational and Cultural Exchange, Inc.

Social Work and Psychology Faculty from Romania visited the MSW program in November 2024 and took part in the inauguration events on campus. The Romanian guests expressed their eagerness to welcome MSW students, an MSW faculty member, and President Lisa Lori to Romania in the near future.

Ryan Scavnicky, Assistant Professor of Practice in the School of Architecture, took part in the launch of Rome: Las Vegas: Bread and Circuses, a groundbreaking book by internationally renowned photographer Iwan Baan in December 2024. Scavnicky authored the eponymous essay featured in the book, which serves as its main text.

Marywood senior multimedia communication students Liz and Maddie Adams, twin sisters who co-founded and host the podcast, Courageously Kind, traveled to San Diego to share messages of kindness and self-esteem with children and families affected by facial differences. Their presentation took place on Saturday, January 18, 2024, at the Girl Scouts of San Diego Balboa Service Center in San Diego, CA.

Marywood faculty member Alexander Dawoody, Ph.D., Director of Marywood University’s Ph.D. Program in Strategic Leadership and Administrative Studies, published two new books in June 2025, The Quantum Metaphors and History of Iraq: From Inventing Civilization to the Modern Failed State.
